ANDREA BERGART
SHE
December 4, 2017 - January 14, 2018
On view 24/7
Cuevas Tilleard is excited to present She by Andrea Bergart in their 291 Grand Street window. The installation will be on view from December 4, 2017 - January 14, 2018.
Andrea Bergart recently returned to New York after a month spent in Lamu, Kenya on the Cuevas Tilleard Artist Residency program. She completed this painting with her experiences of the Swahili coast still at the front of her mind.
Bergart was thinking about Islamic art, which has a large presence on Lamu, given its history as a trading port with a predominantly Muslim population. Based on a sketch made while in residence, She can be viewed on all four sides. The geometric central design of the painting, part of Bergart’s practice for the last few years, is especially inspired by specific Swahili wood carvings that she saw during her time at the residency. In contrast to Islamic art, Bergart wanted to introduce the female figure. Drawing from her experiences as a college-level volleyball player, powerful and active volleyball players lunge across the border of She.
Cuevas Tilleard proudly presents Andrea Bergart for the third time. Andrea has also had solo exhibitions at the Good Children Gallery in New Orleans, LA and Breezeway Gallery in Bloomington, IN. She is a co-founder of “Call your Ball Friends”, a youtube channel where women artists shoot hoops and discuss art. Fostering a dialogue between women artists and the communities in which they make their work, they show women as competent and strong participants in the art world and on the court.
