By Proxy presents indirect artist self-portraits, revealing their subject through materials weighted with personal history. A presentation of artists in absence.

A person can be identified not only by their physical features, but also by their anthropological surrounds. Cultural materials are never meaningless. They speak for themselves and provide extensive narratives about the person who owned or made them, about history.

By Proxy is a presentation of the artist in absence. The show gathers together five female artists who construct themselves through an accumulation of weighted objects to create artwork as an echo of the self. The artists, Alex Ebstein, Sam Jaffe, Rachel Klinghoffer, and Tracy Thomason, Hannah Rose Dumes all explore themes of labor, ornamentation, femininity, and the malleability of the human body. Each artist’s focus is a loaded and specific choice that defines her.
